About the Translation House in Füred
The Lipták house
The family house, built in 1880, has belonged to the Magyar Fordítóház Foundation since 1995, but it can look back on a much longer literary history than that. In the 1940s, the writer Gábor Lipták and his wife filled the house with a vibrant literary life: in their literary salon, significant writers and visual artists of the time came either for a weekend gathering or for weeks of hospitality.
In the 1980s, the owners donated the house to the Literary Fund with the stipulation that it be used for literary activities. In 1995, the Magyar Fordítóház Alapítvány, which was established on this occasion, received it for use, and after carrying out the necessary renovations, opened the doors of the building in 1998.
Over the past 25 years, the House has developed into a well-established venue for translation seminars in a variety of languages, and has hosted countless authors of different nationalities who have translated literary works from Hungarian into their mother tongue. In its library equipped with dictionaries, handbooks and the most important works of Hungarian literature, guests often find their next translation project.

About the project
Poems in Veszprém
The Poems in Veszprém (VEVE) project is implemented within the framework of the 2023 Veszprém-Balaton European Capital of Culture program. The aim of VEVE is to popularize and make poetry more accessible to everyone, to integrate the world of poems into everyday life. During the series of programs, we want to introduce the Translation House to the region and the entire country, and even spread its reputation beyond the borders.
For the project, Fordítóház sought out six renowned foreign poets to invite them to a two-week creative work in April. The poets are guests of the Translation House for two weeks, and during their stay here they can gain an insight into the world that was one of the cornerstones of the Hungarian literary environment in the previous century. Experts guide them around the area, they can create a personal relationship with the landscape and get to know the culture of the region.
During the two weeks, they visit high schools and universities in the area, conduct classes and workshops for students, and also hold talks for the general public. We also asked the poets for a poem each, which will be translated into Hungarian by working together with renowned translators. Bilingual postcards will be made from the poems, and during the summer they will be performed by young actors and actresses at various points in the region.
