Future of Freedom

Film by Jutta Kaussen

Poem by Jaan Malin

Sound poetry is an art that deals with the beauty and expression of sounds, noises and rhythms. It liberates language from its meaning and opens doors to a completely new world of sound and musicality. It comes alive through performance - reading aloud with gestures, facial expressions and body movements that enhance the expressive power and vary the possible meanings. Here, there are hardly any limits to the imagination of the people reading aloud. All means such as satire, imitation, exaggeration up to tender, musical tones are allowed and most appriciated is the joy of playfulness.

The six poets from six different European countries who were invited to the International Poet-in-Residence Programme at the Translators' House in Balatonfüred in spring 2023 visited schools, presented their work there, met their translators and engaged with the language of the host country, Hungary. An intensive working atmosphere developed in the Forditóház, and literary exchange took place in seven languages.

A joint excursion to the cave lake in Tapolca offered the irresistible opportunity to perform and record some sound poems created during the stay under the special acoustic conditions of the cave.

Here is "Future of Freedom" by Jaan Malin from Estonia. Read by the author, Antonio Rivero Taravillo/Spain, Gérard Cartier/France, Yvonne Reddick/UK, Ija Kiva/Ukraine, Guy Helminger/Luxembourg.
